ADSL - All about Broadband

This technology has brought down the price of high speed always-on connectivity to a level that every business whether big or small can now afford to take advantage of. Internet based technology such as:
  • Remote network access via VPN
  • Connecting satellite offices securely
  • Email to every desktop
  • Fast web access for multiple users
  • Microsoft Exchange server access
  • E-commerce applications
  • Intranet Access for staff

What is ADSL?

Adsl is a high speed always on technology which gives connectivity to the internet at a fixed monthly price, and still allows use of the phone line for voice or fax calls. The download speeds range from 512 kbs (kilobits per second) to 2000 kbs. The upload speed for each product is 256kbs. The service is digital based and runs over the copper wires from an analogue phone line, making installation quick and cheap. For most companies, utilising their fax line is normal and they can still send the faxes. Once you have used ADSL, you will never want to use a modem again!

Requirements for ADSL
Requirements for ADSL

Customers need to be close to an ADSL enabled exchange. You can check your number by using our adsl availability checker here. If your number is accepted, you need to have an analogue phone line to run the service down. There are some phone systems which ADSL will not work with such as ISDN and Business Highways.

Virtual Private Networking
Virtual Private Networking

Virtual private networking allows remote users to connect to a network using encrypted tunneling technology through the internet. ADSL provides a very cost effective vehicle for this technology. VPN is quite complex in its operation but here is our short overview:

VPN requires a VPN server, we recommend using the Vigor Router provided with our ADSL products, although Microsoft Windows 2000 server has a VPN server built into it. The client machine (VPN client) then connects to the internet and then contacts the server. The server authenticates the user. This then provides a 'virtual network cable' to the server. This may not seem so great until you factor in to the equation the cost of a 'kilostream' connection. Kilostream cost thousands per year for the point to point connection and is not encrypted, an ADSL connection costs start from £29.99 per month.

Exchange Servers
Exchange Servers

Many companies use Microsoft Exchange as a mail server on their internal networks. Exchange has many great features but also many downsides such as security. Until the version 2000 came out, Exchange had no POP collector built in so a fixed IP was required. Fixed IPs have traditionally been quite expensive, but with ADSL, a fixed IP is £3.00 per month

Connecting your Computer/s to the web
Connecting your Computer/s to the web

The question is often asked, and the answer is not as simple as it may appear. There are three main issues to take into consideration when trying to decide on the most 'appropriate' connection type, they are:
  • The cost of the connection
  • How long and how often do you need to connect?
  • How fast does the connection need to be?
  • How important is the resilience of the connection?
  • Are you wanting to connect as a single user or a network?
  • Do you require a fixed IP number for Microsoft Exchange or similar?
  • Is your local exchange ADSL enabled?

For the majority of businesses, ADSL provides the most cost effective and efficient solution for connecting a small network. However, the exchange must be enabled (check your exchange here) and although ADSL is getting better all the time, it does not have an SLA (Service Level Agreement) so 100% uptime is not guaranteed. This solution will provide good connectivity for less than 10% the cost of a leased line which does carry an SLA.

It is also true to say that nearly all small businesses are unique in their requirements and individual consideration is needed for each client. Gconnect have supplied many connection solutions across a wide range if industries and sectors, for both large and small companies, so if you are unsure what is the most appropriate solution for your business, please call us - if you use the call back button below it won't even cost you the price of the phone call!!
